Volunteer coaches—including senior executives and
successful department heads and managers-- are standing
by ready to help you. Remember, it’s not only what you
know but also who you know . . . and who’s helping you
succeed . . . that creates a rewarding career.
The One to One Coaching program provides an opportunity
for aspiring managers to gain advice and insights from
senior local government executives who provide volunteer
support. Through this program, you can tap into the
experience of those who have “been there, done that” and
begin making connections that can develop into
long-lasting professional relationships.
This process is open-ended and informal, with you, the
aspiring manager setting the agenda. As an aspiring
manager, how would you like to benefit? Maybe, you’re
looking for general career advice. Or, perhaps, you face
some particular decisions and would value another
perspective. Or, you may simply want to expand your
network and get some better insights into the
opportunities and challenges of local government
executive leadership. Think about the various ways in
which you’d like to benefit. But keep in mind that a
volunteer coach isn’t expected to have all of the
answers. Rather, he or she will be there to help you
find the answers that are right for YOU.
If
this sounds like an adventure that you would like to
become a part of, we recommend that you follow these
three easy steps:
First, Some Light Reading:
Take a few minutes to read through the following
guiding documents for this program:
ABCs of One to One Coaching
- Page one provides an overview of how a One to One
Coaching relationship can be beneficial. Page two
offers an optional “Statement of Mutual
Understanding” that you and your volunteer coach may
use, if you choose.
Being a Great Coach and a Winning Player
– These two pages give you some great tips on how to
get your One to One Coaching relationship started.
Next, Choose a Coach:
Yes, it really is that easy! Visit the
Coaches Gallery and
scroll through the information provided about our
volunteer coaches.
Finally, Get Started:
Now that you have selected one or two prospective
coaches, it’s up to you to get the ball rolling.
Seriously, all you have to do is pick up a phone or
send an email. These dedicated volunteers are eager
to begin helping you learn more about the profession,
build your career, or to just give you advice when you
are faced with challenging situations.
We
hope you take advantage of this opportunity and
experience all of the benefits of having a One to One
Coaching relationship. If you have any questions before
getting started, please email
Lynn Lovallo
at FCCMA.
Have fun!
