The City Council Auditor’s Office is actively seeking a Public Accounts Auditor I.

The Council Auditor’s Office is charged with conducting a continuous internal audit of the City of Jacksonville, its boards and independent agencies. The Council Auditor’s Office is also responsible for reviewing total annual budgets exceeding nine billion dollars. By reporting to the City Council, the office is independent of the Mayor and the management of the City and its agencies. The Council Auditor and Assistant Council Auditor are appointed employees of the City Council. This position is appointed by the Council Auditor and reports to a Principal Auditor. Continuing education and tuition reimbursement may be available through the City. Employees have opportunities for advancement within the office. Starting salary is based on CPA eligibility and licensure in the State of Florida.

Examples of Work

  • Conduct performance and financial audits as set forth in various audit programs covering such areas as cash, inventories, receivables, payrolls, contracts, grants, long-term debt, revenues and expenditures.
  • Examples of specific audit steps are the counting of cash, observation of inventories, testing of receivables and billings, various compliance tests and analysis of control and subsidiary ledger accounts.
  • Develop and prepare audit work papers.
  • Periodically assist independent auditors in their annual audits of the City and its agencies.
  • Review detailed financial information and analyze budgets for City departments and independent agencies.
  • Perform other work as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  •  Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Knowledge of Excel and Word.
  • General knowledge of auditing standards, methods, and procedures.
    Open Requirements/Supplemental Information

A bachelor’s or master’s degree in accounting or a bachelor’s or master’s degree in business administration with a major in accounting from an accredited university/college.
Be willing to satisfy all the requirements to sit for the CPA Examination.
Work may be performed at various sites within Duval County requiring the auditor to have a means of transportation at their disposal.
