Sarasota County is looking for a Deputy Director (Senior Manager) to help lead and shape the future of county operations. As a trusted partner to the Director, you will provide executive-level leadership across key service areas including Facilities Maintenance, Facilities Planning, Business Services & Analytics, Materials Management, and Mail/Print Services.
In this high-impact role, you will drive performance, champion innovation, and ensure operational excellence across the department. You’ll play a critical role in transforming strategic priorities into measurable outcomes – while maintaining strong fiscal stewardship, regulatory compliance, and exceptional service delivery. You’ll also step in as Acting Director when needed, helping guide the department with confidence and clarity.

About the Position
Key Responsibilities as a Deputy Director
Executive Operational Leadership:
Provide daily executive oversight of departmental operations across divisions
Ensure alignment of operations with strategic goals set by leadership
Supervise, mentor, and support division managers
Promote accountability, performance measurement, and service excellence
Coordinate cross-division initiatives and resolves complex operational issues
Serve as escalation point for operational conflicts and service disruptions
Act on behalf of the Director when delegated
Strategic Implementation, Business Analytics & Performance Management:
Lead execution of strategic plans, capital programs, and operational initiatives to improve efficiency and effectiveness
Use business analytics and performance data to drive continuous improvement and informed decision-making
Establish and monitors performance metrics, dashboards, and KPIs to track results and identify opportunities
Ensure accountability and timely progress on major projects through data-driven oversight
Integrate technology, innovation, and best practices to enhance service delivery and optimize resources
Oversee continuity planning and risk mitigation to ensure operational resilience and preparedness
Fiscal & Contract Oversight:
Oversee development and management of operating and capital budgets
Assist with budget preparation and presentations to leadership and the Board
Monitor expenditures to ensure fiscal discipline and accountability
Review procurement actions and supports contract negotiations and compliance
Oversee audits and strengthens internal controls, fraud awareness, and financial integrity
Organizational Leadership & Workforce Development:
Strengthen department culture and builds workforce capacity
Coach and develop managers, supporting succession planning and leadership growth
Partner with Human Resources on performance management and disciplinary actions
Promote collaboration, diversity, accountability, professionalism, and high standards of customer service
Executive Representation & Emergency Management:
Represent the Director and department to leadership, stakeholders, vendors, agencies, and the public
Participate in leadership meetings and strategic planning efforts
Ensure clear communication of departmental priorities
Support emergency preparedness and performs EOC and storm-related responsibilities
Standard business hours are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
About You
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Public Administration, Business Management or a related field AND eight (8) or more years of related experience
-OR- Master’s Degree in one of the above-mentioned fields AND six (6) or more years of related experience
-AND- Four (4) or more years of supervisory/management experience
A valid Florida Driver’s License is required at time of hire
Preferred “BONUS” Qualifications:
International Facilities Management Membership and/or Certification
Educational background in architecture, engineering, building construction or related field
Subject to Passing Substance Screening: This position is subject to passing a pre-employment substance screening. An applicant who fails to pass a required drug screening test shall be disqualified from employment for a period of five (5) years.
