How long have you been an FCCMA member, and why did you join?
I became a member in December 2024. I joined to expand my knowledge of city and county government standards and professionalism while capitalizing on opportunities for valuable networking.
Are you an ICMA member? Why did you join, and how long have you been a member?
I am a new member of ICMA and look forward to deepening my understanding of government practices and social responsibility through continued learning and engagement.
Please describe your areas of formal/advanced education.
I hold a Master’s degree in Public Administration with a focus on Emergency Management and a Bachelor’s degree in Marketing.
Why did you select a career in public service?
I have always been drawn to public service for the opportunity it provides to make a direct, meaningful impact on society while building genuine relationships with the community.
Have you always been in the public sector, or have you had experience in the private sector?
Yes, my entire professional career of 24 years has been in the public sector.
Please tell us about your current position and give a brief job description if you are not a City Administrator/Manager.
I am the current Fire Chief & Emergency Manager for the City of Venice. My responsibilities as Fire Chief include, but are not limited to, budget oversight, strategic planning, personnel management, policy development, and implementation. As Emergency Manager, my responsibilities include oversight of the city’s comprehensive emergency management plan, including mitigation, planning, response, and recovery efforts during declared disasters.
Please describe your typical day.
A typical day in my role includes meetings with administrative staff, city officials, and community representatives while ensuring that overall efficiency and comprehensive operations of the fire department are being met.
What is your favorite part of the job?
My favorite part of the job is witnessing the success of the firefighters and officers within the department. Their growth and leadership exemplify the department’s strength and ultimately enhance the service we provide to the community.
What is your least favorite part of the job?
The ethical and emotional weight of the unpopular decisions that must be made to ensure efficiency, credibility, and output of the department.
If you are involved in any volunteer or leadership activities in your community, please share with us a bit about what you do and why it is important to you.
I am an alumnus of the City of Venice Leadership Academy. I joined the program to gain a deeper understanding of Venice’s history and to learn about the organizations and individuals who have helped shape it into the vibrant city it is today.
What is your most memorable experience on the job?
Among my most meaningful experiences was contributing to the research team that successfully achieved the City of Venice Fire & Rescue’s Certificate of Need, allowing the department to operate as an advanced life support transporting service.
What are your hobbies/interests?
My hobbies are spending time with family and anything outdoors, including sports and recreational activities.
If you could give one piece of advice to people interested in a career in public service, what would it be?
My advice would be to always remember, “Service before self.” My question would be, “What is the number one challenge you face as a City Manager?”
Who were your mentors, and how have you passed this information down to other aspiring public administrators?
My mentor is former City Manager Ed Lavallee. I cherish every chance to meet with him and gain insight from his experience and advice.
What career would you pick if you were to pick another?
My career in public safety has been a source of great fulfillment, made possible by the mentors and colleagues who have shaped me. I am now eager to bring that experience and dedication to a second career in city or county management.
Do you have a story you can share about how being a member of FCCMA has helped you or impacted you in a positive way?
Since joining, I have been fortunate to receive encouraging messages from current and retired members offering their guidance and support. The networking opportunities, along with the potential for growth and learning, have been both encouraging and welcomed!
